Engine Company 1 consists of the 21 career firefighters of the Maumelle Fire Department. Currently, 16 of these firefighters are assigned to operations -- these members are responsible for providing fire and rescue services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the citizens and guests of our city. They perform this duty using three rotating shifts with each shift normally working a 24-hour tour of duty followed by 48 hours off duty. The remaining five firefighters are undergoing recruit training and will begin working on the front line later this year.

Allowing for vacation leave and sick time, the department maintains a minimum of three career firefighters on duty at a time. When at least five firefighters are on duty, three members are assigned to Engine 1 while the remaining firefighters on duty will place Engine 2 or Brush 1 in service. Both Brush 1 and Engine 2 are normally reserve rigs only placed in service on an as-needed basis. With the creation of four additional firefighters this year, as well as the addition of three captain positions and two engineer positions, Engine Company 1 will be split in two. The result will be two engines staffed around the clock.

Engine Company 1 was created October 30, 2004 when the five members of the 2004 recruit class -- Scott Eaton, Shane Holmes, Adam Swalls, Josh Woods & Austin Woody -- were assigned to each of the three shifts.
