Shortly before
the volunteer division's twice-monthly training meeting, Maumelle Police
& Fire Communications received a report of smoke coming from a residence
at 6 Pinehurst Way. Upon their arrival, firefighters found light to moderate
smoke coming from under the eaves and from a side window. Unaware if the
home was occupied or not, firefighters did a search for occupants -- none
were found -- and stretched an attack line into the kitchen to extinguish
the
fire.

Only hours
before the fire, Maumelle's front-line pumper (Engine 1) died while responding
to a rescue call. The department's reserve pumper (Engine 2) had already
been out of service due to maintenance issues. So, on the afternoon of May
23rd, Maumelle borrowed a reserve pumper -- "Standby 103" -- from North Little
Rock and pressed it into service as Maumelle Engine 3. Engine 3 was first-due
at Pinehurst Way and pumped during the
fire.

volunteer firefighters on the scene. Firefighters quickly extinguished the
fire, limiting fire damage to the kitchen.

The fire
appeared to originate in the dishwasher. Firefighters benefited greatly from
the fact that neighbors noticed the smoke while the fire was still small
and quickly called 911 to notify the fire
department.

Acting Engineer
Jeremy New disconnects large-diameter hoses from Truck 1. These large hoses
supply water from the hydrant to the fire apparatus. At five inches in diamter,
they are essentially portable above-ground water
mains.
