Firefighters
watch helplessly as fire extends from the garage after crews exhausted the
tank water of Truck 1 and Brush 1. A broken hydrant just down the street
from the fire kept firefighters from establishing a water supply.

Adam Swalls waits with a dry hose as Maumelle firefighters are forced to
rely on North Little Rock Engine 4 to respond to the scene and establish
a water supply. Mechanical problems had Maumelle's fleet down to only one
pumping apparatus at the time of the fire. Engine 2 was retired several months
ago after a series of problems with its pump and tank. Engine 1 was out of
service after mechanical problems prevented it from responding to an emergency
July 6.

Although
firefighters encountered several obstacles in the early moments of this fire,
an aggressive attack was mounted as soon as a water supply was established.
The result was that the fire was largely contained to the garage area of
the home. Much of the residence was spared of fire damage.

After
their attack was hampered by a faulty fire hydrant, it took several hours
for firefighters from Maumelle and North Little Rock to fully extinguish
this fire at 105 Maranes Cr. in the Country Club of Arkansas neighborhood.

Captain
Eugene Stacy begins his investigation of the fire the following day. Preliminary
reports suggest the fire began in the garage before extending into the living
areas of the residence. Although the entire residence suffered smoke damage,
the majority of fire damage was limited to areas adjacent to the garage.

Two
engine companies from North Little Rock responded to the fire while Maumelle
recalled all available off-duty firefighters for assistance. Oak Grove's
Engine 3 responded to Maumelle's station to provide coverage to the city.

The
initial report of the fire was received at 9:19 p.m. After extinguishing
the main body of fire in the garage, firefighters spent several hours locating
and extinguishing pockets of fire in the walls, ceiling and attic of the
home. All personnel were clear of the scene shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday
morning.
