| When
Maumelle firefighters arrived to investigate a fire alarm October 6, 2004
at the 10-story Audubon Pointe Retirement Community, they found smoke showing
from a fifth-floor apartment and some residents perched at their windows
looking for clean air to breathe. Acting Captain Charles Watson immediately
struck a second alarm, bringing two engine companies from the North Little
Rock Fire Department for assistance. |

apartment evacuated prior to firefighters' arrival on the fifth
floor. |
|
 |
| Once
on the fifth floor, firefighters found an Audubon Pointe maintenance man
holding the fire in check by spraying water into the apartment from the hallway.
Firefighters then made entry into the apartment, searching for the seat of
the fire and extinguishing it. |

 |
| While
an attack team extinguished the fire in the apartment, other firefighters
began evacuating residents of the building down stairways. A more comprehensive
room to room search was conducted on the fire floor with firefighters searching
every apartment for occupants who may have been unable to
escape. |
